The Adventures of Violet and Dash: Book 1, Friend or Foe? This is a cute chapter book based on the movie The Incredibles 2. Violet and Dash may be part of the Incredibles and super heroes but they also have chores, homework and school, just like any other kid. Violet wishes her life could be NORMAL, but Dash wants life to be SUPER all the time. When some mysterious events happen at school, the siblings begin to wonder - are there other Super kids out there? And are these kids heroes or villains? The story is told in diary format with Violet and Dash alternating chapters in the same diary (since Dash kept reading Violets diary, she told him he could write in it as well). There are two books in the series so far and it is a great set for reluctant readers, as the diary format makes for a quick and easy read and the story moves along quickly alternating between the two narrators. It tells a story of how if you work together you can accomplish SUPER results! Kids will love the fact that it looks handwritten and has illustrations mixed in just like a normal diary would and of course who can resist a Super Hero story? Frog has big plans for an exciting Christmas vacation this year. According to his brochure, the "Christmas Extravaganza Hotel" has supersonic sleigh ride, a big singing tree, tons of bright lights and also a North Pole breakfast bar each morning! Unfortunately a map-reading error brings him to the home of a bear who's all set for a quiet, simple Christmas of his own. Frog is crushed but bear offers him a place to stay, and soon realizes he's has to think of alternatives to all the activities in Frog's brochure. Bear and Frog end up having a blast enjoying each other's company as they bake cookies, have snowball fights, ride sleighs and gaze at the Northern Lights! Frog loves Bear's Christmas Hotel and forgets all about his fancy resort in the brochure. Children will absolutely love this story about two unlikely friends who through chance, explore the true meaning of Christmas together. The book's large beautiful pictures and cheery expressions make this a wonderful choice for story time this holiday season! By Justin Barkhurst, Penworthy Sales Representative Picture Books are so important, for many different reasons. They engage emergent readers, bring families and communities together for story hours, and aid struggling readers with vibrant illustrations. Picture books have the ability to open the imagination, and explore places we may have never been. It is important that we continue to put excellent picture books in the hands of children and instill in them the importance of reading at a young age. At Penworthy our mission is to help you inspire a lifelong love of reading in kids, and that starts with Picture Books. November is picture book month so gathered interesting articles about Picture Books for your enjoyment:
This book is part of a books series about two friends, Desmond and Andres. Surf's Up, Creepy stuff gives a story of Desmond and Andres who go to the beach and they have to battle beach bullies, who also happen to be creepy monsters! Even though they battle monsters and ghosts in all of the books, the two friends are complete opposites when it comes to dealing with spooky or scary stuff. Desmond is a Ghost Patrol and isn't scared of anything and Andres is afraid of everything. With easy-to-read language and illustrations on almost every page it is perfect for any readers.
By Nate Kovatch, Penworthy Senior Sales Representative New to the Penworthy Story-time Collection in October is the fantastic small press title, The Only Way is Badger by Stella Jones. Badger is the main character who is extremely relatable to even the smallest child. He is stubborn, rude, obstinate, loud, demanding, bullying and exclusionary. Badger feels the only right ways of living and being are to be more badger, to look like, live like, act like and be like a badger. One by one, he excludes every other animal from the forest by bullying them and then casting them aside for their own uniqueness. In the end of the story, Badger realizes he is all alone, and finally sees all the other animals had value too and having friends is more important than holding on to his bullying and exclusion. This Penworthy Pick is perfect for story time. Badgers demanding ways are great for read aloud exaggerations and make for a very fun and animated story time circle. This book is excellent for teaching behavior, character building skills, friendship and tolerance of others for Pre-K and up. Looking for some great fiction to add to your STEAM collection? I invite you to take the time to get to know Ada Lace, Nina, and their friends as they use math, science and technology to solve mysteries. I love the Ada Lace Chapter Books series because it reminds me of myself as a little girl. However, I didn’t have any characters, books or visible role models such as this for me to follow growing up. This series is a great way to show your little readers that science is for everyone, and can be used in everything we do! Written by a NASA engineer Emily Calandrelli, we get to know Ada and her best friend Nina as they solve mysteries using different approaches- Ada uses science and technology, while Nina is more about the right-brained way of solving problems. Even though they are opposites, they work well together. I love this dynamic because it lends humor and depth to the characters, and a realistic portrayal of 3rd grade friendships. The series also addresses topics such as disagreements between friends, tension with parents, jealousy, and being overly- competitive. This series can really add depth to your STEAM collection by appealing to the fast growing group of girls that love science and can’t get enough! By Laura Paff, Penworthy Sales Representative Did you know that October is Global Diversity Awareness Month? An entire month dedicated to celebrating the world and it's many diverse facets from gender, to culture, to societal groups. And what better way to celebrate, than to discuss diversity in literature and what it means for today's children.
Diversity in literature can help us say goodbye to close minded opinions and welcome open hearts to all of the difference we see in the world. Presenting our differences in an easy to understand text, can help children relate and empathize at a young age. It expands their minds and helps them to see other cultures and races that they might not see otherwise. It is so important that we teach acceptance at a young age so children can grow into successful adults without any bias or prejudices. Penworthy is proud to carry a large collection of diverse titles. We have titles that talk about what it's like to start school in a new country. We have titles that subtly feature diversity with a group of multicultural lead characters. We have titles that introduce diversity through new countries and different holidays. There is something that everyone can relate to, and can help explore the world of differences around our globe. For ways to celebrate diversity, we have compiled some wonderful resources for you to use in your library:
