Did you know that October is Global Diversity Awareness Month? An entire month dedicated to celebrating the world and it's many diverse facets from gender, to culture, to societal groups. And what better way to celebrate, than to discuss diversity in literature and what it means for today's children.
Diversity in literature can help us say goodbye to close minded opinions and welcome open hearts to all of the difference we see in the world. Presenting our differences in an easy to understand text, can help children relate and empathize at a young age. It expands their minds and helps them to see other cultures and races that they might not see otherwise. It is so important that we teach acceptance at a young age so children can grow into successful adults without any bias or prejudices. Penworthy is proud to carry a large collection of diverse titles. We have titles that talk about what it's like to start school in a new country. We have titles that subtly feature diversity with a group of multicultural lead characters. We have titles that introduce diversity through new countries and different holidays. There is something that everyone can relate to, and can help explore the world of differences around our globe. For ways to celebrate diversity, we have compiled some wonderful resources for you to use in your library:
