Luciana: Out of this World American Girl Contemporary Girl of the Year, Luciana, wants to be the first girl to walk on Mars. Luciana is a driven, focused, outgoing girl who has her goals in place. In this story, Luciana and her family are headed to Chile for winter break to see cousins and extended family. However, from the beginning, Luciana is so wrapped up in telling stories of herself and her accomplishments, her reception is less than welcoming. She had just been excluded by her cousins to go on a camping adventure, when she receives a surprise invite from 'frenemy', Claire Jacobs, from astronaut training camp to join her at the Mars habitat in the desert and watch NASA scientists at work. Torn between wanting to get close to her relatives and working with NASA scientists, Luciana chooses to give Claire a second chance. (Claire had been her partner at Space Camp in the second book and abandoned her in a diving drill in an underwater unit.) Luciana and Claire have their character and friendship tested. Eventually, the girls end up in a life and death situation and have to rely on each other for survival. Two strong women role models in the book, the grandmother and one of the NASA scientists, provide wisdom and guidance in formulating their choices and actions. In this story there are many moments of conflict, drama, opportunities for learning and reflection, and true friendships all set in the framework of science and Mars exploration.
