Gilbert the Great by Jane Clarke, illustrated by Charles Fuge With Shark Week about to start on July 23, my Penworthy Pick is a shark themed picture book. This is a really sweet (not scary) story about friendship featuring a shark named Gilbert. One day Gilbert’s best friend, a remora fish named Raymond, moves away. Gilbert is left feeling very lonely. So many children have to deal with the sadness of a close friend moving away during childhood. This book is a wonderful way for children to see that you can get past the sadness and there will always be more friends to make. Critically acclaimed artist Charles Fuge does a fantastic job illustrating this picture book. I especially liked the information about great white sharks and their companion fish, remoras, in the beginning of the book. This is a good read-aloud selection with a happy ending.
