Tenney is one of American Girl's new contemporary series characters, recently released in February 2017. Girls have enjoyed the American Girl historical fiction dolls and books since 1986; however today's girls are a bit more sophisticated, and their interests are a bit more sophisticated as well. In fact, due to popular demand, American Girl also released their first boy doll along with Tenney: her bandmate Logan, who is a drummer!
Tenney is a twelve year old girl who is a songwriter, singer, and musician. She loves playing music with her family in local cafes and social halls, and is thrilled when she's offered an opportunity to play at Nashville's famous Bluebird Café. However, Tenney's parents decide she's too young to perform professionally - a frustration which most pre-teen girls have experienced. The story is loosely based upon two sisters, Leah Bryan and Hannah Fisher, who were the youngest musicians to ever receive a Grammy for their soundtrack of the movie, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?". Many girls in this age group dream of being a singer or musician, and they can relate to Tenney's struggle to follow her dreams while staying true to herself, despite the fame that's knocking at her door. Again, the subject matter is a bit more sophisticated than the traditional American Girl stories, so these chapter books should appeal to 4th-6th grade girls.
